Imagine walking outside after putting your contact lenses in and being blasted by the sun, yet you find that your eyes aren’t immediately squinting. Those contact lenses you’ve put in automatically darkened to filter out all bright light all while keeping your vision sharp and eyes comfortable. This fantasy has finally come true with the product born out of the partnership between Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and Transitions Optical. Johnson & Johnson has begun to distribute their Acuvue Oasys with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology adaptive lenses which employ the same technology as transitions eyeglass lenses.
What are Acuvue Oasys with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology?
These contact lenses are built for the modern and active lifestyle. They help reduce the exposure of bright light to our eyes both indoors and out. They also filter out blue light and are the only contact lenses that provide 100% protection against UVB rays.
These lenses operate using a dynamic photochromic filter, like the one in Transitions eyeglass lenses, that automatically react to changing levels of light, helping the eye recover from bright sunlight faster. The two-week reusable contact lens activates once they are exposed to UV or HEV light, becoming dark in 45 seconds and fade back to clear within 90 seconds of going indoors. Once at full activation, they will be able to block up to 70 percent of all visible light, providing the highest level of UV protection out of any contact lens available. They can even reduce the halos and starburst you may see from bright light sources at night.
TIME Magazine named these lenses as one of the “Best Inventions of 2018.”
“The introduction of Acuvue Oasys with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology has been 15-plus years in the making, and its distinction as a Time Best Invention of 2018 is incredibly meaningful to the many researchers, scientists, engineers and others who have seen the product from its initial concept,” states Ashley McEvoy, Executive Vice President and Worldwide Chairman of Johnson & Johnson. “We believe it will redefine how people think about wearing contact lenses, and we are excited to see the world react to this first-of-its-kind innovation.”
Even MLB All-Star, Bryce Harper, is tapped to be a brand ambassador for the lens, beginning to wear them on the field during the 2019 season.
